Car Park charges in Huntingdon have just increased by 20% and because the machines give no change the effective increase is even higher.
At a recent Huntingdonshire District Council Business event I suggested that all parking charges should be completely abolished. (along with all posts in the council responsible for managing, administering and fining) I received a loud spontaneous cheer from the audience which rather surprised me.
With the old Marks & Spencers store still boarded up and plethora of “charity shops”, “cash converters” and “we buy your gold” shops springing up the quality of our town centre needs to be rescued (quickly)
The Council response was that “free parking” would encourage workers to park in the town. Workers are exactly the type of people that we need to encourage into the town – by definition they have money to spend.
How about 3 hours of free parking in every town centre car park. We need to start embracing a growth agenda and free parking for shoppers and workers is a superb place to start. What do you think ?
